Saving the Tomb......
Opinion of Cost - Structural Repairs Landry Tomb
Prepared by Patrick Sparks, Sparks Engineering
May 28th 2014
Sparks Engineering has completed a detailed evaluation of the tomb and has given us a cost estimate for the structural repairs and preservation of the tomb.
The work can be done in phases as we raise the funds. Some fairly inexpensive actions will make a big difference in the condition of the tomb. This is the budget that was given to us:
Mary Ellen Stinski, President of the Landry Foundation.
**************************************************************************************************************************
Phase 1: $8,400 + door
Fence & Sign: The tomb is unsafe to walk near due to falling stones. Estimate for a fence
and signs to warn people of hazard: $600
Vegetation control: Monthly inspection & weed removal using a man lift 4-8 man hour/month for
36 mo: $21,600
***************************************************************************************************************************
Phase 2: $350,800
Stonework: A more accurate evaluation would need to be done by a stone mason who specializes in monuments.
Current estimate is that 1/3 of stones in good condition, 1/3 to be reset, 1/3 to be replaced.
Reset stone: $20,000
Replacement of stone: $300,000
Grouting & Stitching: Grouting of all voids and cracks would be done after weeds are under control.
Then the stones would be realigned; and cracks cleaned: $26,000.
Stitching involves installing small stainless steel rods strategically to reduce movement of stone: $4,800
*****************************************************************************************************************************
Phase 3: $19,200
Replacing Roof: Teme-coated stainless steel (quoted) or lead (more expensive), flat seam soldered
attached with stainless steel cleats:
Lower roof $16,000
Upper roof $3,200
******************************************************************************************************************************
Phase 4: $ 14,000
Cleaning & Conservation Treatment: Cleaning is quoted for paying a professional. It could be less for volunteers supervised by a professional: $10,000
Conservation treatment must be done by a professional only after sufficient test
has been completed: $4,000
******************************************************************************************************************************
Miscellaneous: $18,000
Further Investigation:
1.Testing of Conservation Treatment on Stone. This includes literature review,
lab & field testing to establish effectiveness and consequences:$15,000
2.Petrographic Examination: To identify intrinsic deficiencies in the stone to
provide information regarding the choice of conservation treatment: $3,000
******************************************************************************************************************************
Total Construction Cost: $415,200
Additional Fees
1.Contingency Fee: 20% Construction cost: $83,000
2. Testing: 1% Construction cost: $4,200
3. Engineering fees 5% of Construction cost: $20,800
Total Estimate of Cost From Sparks Engineering: $523,200
